How Often Should You Scan Windows for Malware?

By Malware-Bytes.net Editorial Team · Published 2026-08-12 · Updated 2026-08-28

There is no universal number. Frequency should follow how the PC is used and whether anything is watching in between.

A workable schedule

SetupSuggested cadence
Real-time protection enabledOne scheduled threat scan per week
Free scanner onlyA manual threat scan every week or two
Shared or family PCWeekly, plus after new software is installed
PC used for work dataWeekly scheduled scan and monthly rootkit-enabled scan

Always scan after these events

  • Installing software from an unfamiliar source
  • A browser suddenly changing homepage or search engine
  • Clicking a link in a suspicious email or message
  • Connecting a USB drive from outside the household
  • Any unexplained slowdown, crash or pop-up pattern

Why daily full scans are counterproductive

They consume hours of disk activity, find almost nothing beyond what the first scan found, and train people to ignore the results. A weekly threat scan plus event-driven checks catches far more per minute spent.

Frequently asked questions

Do scheduled scans need the PC to stay awake?

Yes, or the scan is skipped. Pick a time the PC is normally on rather than the middle of the night.
