How to Remove Adware From Windows
Adware is the most common infection on home PCs and usually arrives with free software. It is also the easiest to remove completely, if you clean the browser as well as the system.
Removal sequence
- Settings → Apps: uninstall programs you do not recognize, sorted by install date.
- Run AdwCleaner and quarantine what it finds.
- Run a threat scan to catch anything non-advertising from the same bundle.
- Remove unknown browser extensions in every installed browser.
- Reset each browser's homepage, new-tab page and default search engine.
- Reboot and confirm the ads are gone.
Check the shortcuts
A classic hijack appends a URL to the browser shortcut's target. Right-click the shortcut, open Properties, and make sure the Target field ends at the .exe with nothing after it.
Preventing the next one
- Choose custom installation and untick bundled offers
- Download from vendor sites rather than aggregator portals
- Keep potentially-unwanted-program detection enabled in your scanner
